In 1994, I was not particularly happy about the news of ‘Batman 3’. Michael Keaton choosing not to do the third installment of the franchise. He had defined the film adaptation of the character. 'Batman' (1989) was great and 'Batman Returns' (1992) was okay but too violent in my regards. I was doubtful that Val Kilmer was going to be able to fill those shoes. He was great in ‘Top Gun’; ‘Tombstone’; ‘The Doors’, but this was different. This was BATMAN!! Batman is larger then life. When I saw Kilmer in the role, I was not expecting much. The promos looked good but ads can be misleading.
I was wrong. ‘Batman Forever’ (1995) was awesome and Kilmer was great. More like the comic book version of The Dark Knight. Not Keaton but that was okay. A Batman who questioned if he needed to walk away. A Batman that needed help. Not sure who he was anymore still burdened by the memories of his parent's death. A Batman that found himself beyond the struggles. Not angry driven but purpose. Contemplative of the obstacles round him. Showing vulnerability. So layered. Still a favorite. Loved the costume, except for the biological accuracy and world building was fun.
I am sorry to see that Kilmer has gone home to God. I was glad having him around. He fought throat cancer for over a decade, never falling to defeat. Free now of pain and with God.
Cannot think of a bad role he had. A style and charisma rarely seen. He lived his faith. He was a fantastic performer and you believed in him. Rest in God. May peace be with your family. And may you be remembered as Batman…Forever
